Chukchi Sea - Ancillary Activity
Statoil USA E&P Inc, (Statoil)
July 14, 2011 - The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement (BOEMRE) has notified Statoil that it may conduct ancillary activities in the Chukchi Sea beginning in August 2011. The approval authorizes Statoil to conduct seismic surveys for site clearance and shallow hazards, and perform shallow coring for geotechnical evaluation data.
Statoil notified the bureau of its plans in a letter dated March 31, 2011. The bureau then conducted an Environmental Assessment (EA) to examine the proposed activities in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and the implementation of departmental and bureau regulations.
Based on its review, BOEMRE found no evidence that the proposed actions would cause undue or serious harm or damage to the human, marine, or coastal environments. Therefore, the bureau determined that an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) was not required and issued a Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI), which allowed the ancillary activities to proceed.
